Dear Club Members,

I present to you the 75th. Annual Report of Garie Surf Life Saving Club for the season of 2016-2017. The individual reports of the various Club activities and events are documented in the link above. Due to time restrictions with our auditors the Financial Statement will be presented at a special general meeting in August.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Management Committee for their ongoing support, in particular Michael Bretherton for stepping into the role of president to help us through the season. Thank you to Greg Betts and his team who put in a massive effort both on and off the beach. Belinda & Sandra for their efforts both behind the scenes and on the beach to ensure nippers had a successful year. And a special thank you to each and every one of our club members; whether you patrolled, helped out with water safety, ran the bbq, helped behind the bar, assisted with training or attended meetings, each and everyone of you helped to support our small Club in some way and with the comradary of our members we had another successful season.

I would like to welcome our new president David Cross and wish him and his new management committee team all the best for another successful season!

See you on the beach,

Member of the Month

Sandra Leon

For those who don’t know Sandra is the Nipper Secretary for the season and she gets through an incredible amount of work, that ticks over in the back ground. Sandra is an integral part of our Nipper program and is one of the main reasons that Nippers has continued to be so successful this season. A huge thanks to Sandra for her outstanding effort not only this month but every month!

2017 RNP District Junior Carnival

Well done and thank-you to all the nippers and parents that were able to make the 2017 RNP District Junior Carnival at Era SLSC. I know a number of us had thoughts of turning back when we faced the climb out of Little Garie but lifted by the kids’ excitement, we made it.

Overall we had 23 Garie Nippers attend and participate in all events, even though we had the smallest team, our Nippers achieved some great results (personal bests and overall wins). All the kids should be commended for their great attitude and effort, they gave it their all and did us proud.  A special thanks to the Era SLSC for putting on a great event and keeping us well fed and hydrated. Eager to see many more Nippers next year for the 2018 RNP District Junior Carnival at Burning Palms.

We are unable to go ahead with our scheduled Nipper Day at Bundeena on Sunday 11th December due to lack of water safety as per the Nipper Calendar.BUT, we have received an invitation from North Cronulla SLSC to join them for Nippers on this day instead!

They are also going to allow us to do our competition proficiencies (which you will need for the RNP 3 Way Carnival in January) on this day, as well as joining them for their photo day, so we can get photos of all our Nippers in club colours.

We will need to provide our own Age Managers to look after our nippers on the beach, so I will be contacting all the Age Managers shortly regarding this, so we can make sure it goes ahead. I will have more details in the next few days about times and details of the day, but am so excited for this opportunity for our Nippers. I want to say a huge thank you to Donna from North Cronulla SLSC for this invitation, as well as a number of other offers they have come up with that I hope to be able to share with you all shortly.

Exciting times, and stay tuned!!!

PS Any Age Managers wanting to contact me about this please do so via email at

For those nippers interested in doing their competition proficiency at North Cronulla on Sunday 11th December here are the proficiency requirements for each age group so you know what you are expected to do. You will need to complete this to attend the 3 way carnival in January. Note they are open water swims around cans in the ocean. Any question please send via email to

Member’s of the Month

On behalf of the Garie Management Committee and the Club we would like to extend our thanks to the Nipper team. Belinda Eshman, Tony Graham and Sandra Leon, without their hard work and dedication we would not have been able to get Nippers running for the season. A special mention also to the Age Managers & Water Safety team for their tireless efforts each nipper session. Well done on a great start to the season.

To David Cross for being nominated for Distinguished Long Service. On behalf of Garie SLSC we thank you for your contributions to the Club and Community.

Welcome to Garie John, Carol, Annabel & Amelia!

As a recently joined member of Garie Surf Club, along with my two daughers, Annabel (under 10s) and Amelia (under 8s) who have enrolled in Nippers this season, I was asked to provide a brief bio of my history with Surf Life Saving clubs in Australia.

I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, and on leaving school in late 1992, being at a bit of a loss, I embarked on achieving my bronze medallion at Tamarama SLSC and succeeded in January 1993. I found it was a great way of staying in touch with many of my school friends, as they rowed surf boats for Tamarama and I became involved in competition rowing around that time too. I remain a member of Tamarama today, as a Long Service Member and have performed more than my fair share of patrols and rescues.

As a ‘Tama Boatie’ I and my crew mates compete in surf carnivals, one of which is an annual event at Scotts Head, NSW. This competition has become an annual pilgrimage for my now lifelong friends and I, and while the rowing is what draws us there, this is now a firm tradition in our annual calendar even for those who no longer compete. After one such carnival, back in the mid 2000s and after a few refreshments we all learned that Scotts Head Surf Club was struggling for numbers, and so we all agreed to sign up and many of us remain Scotts Head members today too. As well as competing in the annual carnival, I have also taken my children there on holidays and always pop in to enjoy the friendly banter of my fellow members at the club.

I still compete in Surf Boat Carnivals, however given that Tamarama no longer maintains its own boats in 2012, I joined North Bondi Surf Club with my crew and we compete under that banner currently. I have been a member of North Bondi for nearly 5 years now.

So, being a member of Tamarama, Scotts Head, North Bondi and Burning Palms, some may ask – why Garie?
As mentioned, my two daughters are Nipper age, and while we now live in the Blue Mountains I want to give them an authentic Aussie childhood experience. To me, this means Nippers, and all that Nippers encompasses – enjoying the beach and having fun in the sun, learning important life skills as well as water safety and importantly mate-ship. While I am a member of a few Sydney clubs, which gives them choices, in my view the best experience for my girls is the smaller circuit that includes Burning Palms and Garie Clubs. The trip to Garie from the Blue Mountains takes about 75-80 minutes, about the same time it would take to get to Bondi or Tamarama, however the experience they would have at either of those clubs is markedly different to that which they have enjoyed as Burning Palms Nippers for the last two seasons, and I anticipate a great season ahead as members of Garie. I used to be involved with Nippers at Tamarama, and know that things are run very differently today. Last season those kids only got to go in the water once, out of an entire weekly season of Sundays. While Garie may be fortnightly, the kids at least get wet almost every session, and most agree that this is their absolute favourite part!

Thank you all for making me and my family welcome at Garie, and I should mention that I have also recruited my partner Carol, who will be joining up for the first time, and completing her SRC to assist with water safety as we recently learned that numbers were low. I always think with SLS the more you put into a club or a season the more you get back and me and my family are looking forward to a great season with great people and fantastic club.

Members Profile

Name: Belinda Eshman
Where are you from? Engadine
When did you join the Club? 2 Years ago, this will be our third season
Why did you join? I wanted the kids to be confident and safe at the beach as we go on holidays to a lot of un patrolled beaches. I wanted them to have the skills to be able to keep themselves safe at the beach and what to do if they got into trouble, so we joined Garie SLSC for the Nipper Program. I think surf awareness and safety is a life skill.
Do you have a role within the Club? What is it? Yes, I have recently joined the committee as the Child Protection Officer and look forward to helping out the club in other ways as well. I think it is important to contribute to organisations that you are involved with that are run by volunteers, and it gives the kids a great sense of community as well.
What do you do outside of Garie SLSC? I work part time in Administration and Book Keeping.
Random Fact: My children are triplets
